Ingredients

  • 1/2 c. butter, softened
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1 c. confectioners sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 T. almond extract
  • 1 t. vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c. all purpose flour
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1/2 t. red food color
  • 1/4 c. crushed peppermint candy
  • 1/4 c. granulated sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Mix butter, shortening, confectioners sugar, egg and extract until blended.
  3. Blend in flour and salt slowly until fully mixed into dough.
  4. Divide dough in half and place each half in separate bowls.
  5. Blend food color into one half.
  6. Shape 1 t. of each colored dough into 4″ rope.
  7. Roll together the two ropes until they are attached, but not mixed into each other.
  8. Place onto ungreased cookie sheet.
  9. Bake about 9 minutes or until light brown.
  10. While cookies are cooking, blend peppermint candy in food processor until it becomes a coarse ground.
  11. Mix in bowl with granulated sugar.
  12. Once you remove the cookies from the oven, immediately sprinkle with sugar and peppermint candy mixture.
